We Are Eco-Friendly

Kamat Hotels (India) Ltd. Green Initiative

The Orchid Hotel Mumbai Vile Parle is one of the crown gems of Orchid Hotels, designed with utmost care for the environment. Our hotel is the first hotel in Asia to win the Ecotel Certification and has received innumerable awards since the beginning of the operation. The Orchid – Eco-friendly Hotel in Mumbai remains one of only six hotels worldwide to maintain this certification. Our hotel is regarded as one of the best sustainable hotels in India.

One Green Nation, One Green Family

Kamat Hotels (India) Ltd. Seed Ball Initiative

Our sustainable hotels in India are focusing on helping reduce the costs of planting various useful indigenous plant species (mostly trees!). The ball helps protect the seed within from predators such as birds, rodents and insects and extremes of temperature until the rains arrive!

The seed-balls that are easier to plant as compared to saplings are made from mud, organic compost and seeds. The advantage of the seed-balls is that they can be thrown to any land to grow, provided that the soil is not too dry or dense with other vegetation.

The Orchid celebrated World Environment Week and distributed around 2500 pouches of vermicompost and basil seed packs and spread the message of the need to combat global warming and the importance of planting trees and managing solid waste. Also, interesting documentaries on wildlife were screened, and several fun eco games were organized for the kids.

What are seed balls?

A Seed ball is simply that - a seed inside of a ball of mud and compost, mixed with some nutritious binders. Once soaked, the seed ball will help retain and prolong a moist environment around the seed to encourage germination.

How to make?

Just store the seed ball in a dry place and throw it anywhere you want the tree to grow. Yes! It's that simple. Nature will take care of the rest.

Green Start to Heavenly Earth

Kamat Hotels (India) Ltd. Ganpatree Initiative

Every year, millions of Ganesh idols, small, large and humongous, are drowned in rivers, lakes, and seas around the world during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. As part of the ‘Visarjan’, these Ganesh idols make their way to the nearest water bodies where they are then casually submerged into the water. But they don’t dissolve immediately due to the materials used while preparing these Idols. With time, the paint and other synthetic materials on the idols peel off and start floating around in the water causing pollution. Airborne contaminants from these chemicals spread far and wide, polluting everything in close vicinity.

In order to avoid this, the concept of Ganpatree had been introduced, wherein the idol is made up of red soil, organic fertilizer and vegetable seeds. The seeds are mixed with mud to make the idol and they are also inserted into the mud pot. Organic fertilizer does not allow the seeds to dry up. On the submersion day, we don't immerse, but water It. Instead of immersing the idol into the waterbody, people can start watering the idol everyday. Due to this, the idol will start melting in the mud pot and the seed germination process will begin immediately. Ganpatree is one of the ecological approaches that The Orchid Hotel advocates and follows.

KHIL Initiatives

The major initiatives taken by the Company under Corporate Social Responsibility are in the area of the environment. 'The Orchid', flagship hotel of the Company, has taken various initiatives for creating awareness and conservation of the environment, some of which are as under:

The Orchid has adopted and maintains gardens and traffic islands around the Mumbai city for beautification purposes and improvement of the overall environment.

The Orchid, along with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, has initiated the Nirmalya Project wherein Nirmalya generated during the Ganesh festival is collected, segregated and converted into valuable vermicompost to ensure that it is not dumped. Nirmalya Project was acknowledged by granting The Golden Star- Most Admired CSR practice of the Year Award by the Stars of the Industry group.

Old plastic cans, converted into nest boxes, have been up in the hotel lane to conserve sparrows. These boxes are also distributed to the employees and the guests of the hotel.

Several events namely poster competition, wealth out of waste competition, quiz competition, photography competition, screening of documentaries on the environment, interactive sessions with NGO Green peace on Global warming and conservation of the environment were held to increase awareness of environmental issues.

The Orchid is one of the few hotels to spread environmental awareness to students of schools and colleges who are invited to The Orchid regularly, where they are educated about solid waste management, energy efficiency and water conservation and preservation and taught about vermiculture, 4 bin segregation system, water-saving measures, and other environmental practices. During the year under review, more than 300 students visited the hotel.

Earth Hour 2013 was observed in The Orchid by switching off non-essential lights of the hotel to accomplish the endeavour to mobilize the entire globe to take action against climate change.

A silent rally was conducted by Green team members of The Orchid before Diwali, to urge the public to reduce air and noise pollution in the city by not using firecrackers.

As a caring corporate citizen, our Company has recruited a reasonable number of physically challenged persons, thereby providing employment opportunities to this underprivileged segment of the society.
